I had never really spent a lot of time in a barn. Didn’t grow up on a farm. Never wanted to spend time in a barn or out behind it. So when this barn spoke to me and invited me inside, I listened.
It took me in on a blazing hot summer day and began to reveal its stories. So many that I could not get them all down. I slowly and methodically explored all its corners—the dairy stalls, the piles of hay, broken equipment, leftover belongings of previous owners, broken windows, and much more than my eye could take in. I tried to record the stories as carefully and respectfully as I could with my camera, but it was too much. I slowly realized that these stories were about a past that was buried deep inside a memory of mine that I hadn’t been aware of before.
This barn and these photos served to awaken a part of me that had been quiet for many years. Ultimately, it led me to explore other places that stirred new memories. The product of that experience is the Torn Memories Series.
